University College Birmingham (UCB) management are conducting a restructuring exercise. Management argue this is not a cost cutting exercise.
73 senior lecturing staff have been told they are at risk of redundancy and asked to re-apply for 42 new senior lecturer roles. These new roles have an increasing workload with no additional pay. Staff who are not successful will be given notice of redundancy. UCB are offering a severance package that is less than the contractual notice entitlement of members. They are using ACAS to to conclude termination of employment agreements with members, which basically denies members the opportunity of obtaining one to one advice from an independent legal adviser through UCU. This saves the university having to pay for said advice.
Other lecturing staff were told that their job was not at risk – but instead were given new job descriptions which were not negotiated – these have huge increases in workloads and with little possibility of future promotion. UCB plans to bridge the shortfall in staff by using more Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and lecturers at the bottom of the pay spine.
UCU branch and members argue that this will have a clear impact on the remaining staff at UCB in terms of both workload levels and morale and this will have a seismic impact on UCB students, their learning experience yet UCB students are still expected to pay tuition fees in excess of £9,000 per annum.
