The University of Glasgow has placed more than 80 staff from its Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU) in the School of Health and Wellbeing at risk of redundancy.
We, the undersigned, condemn this decision by the School, the College of Medical Veterinary and Life Sciences within which it sits, and the University of Glasgow as a whole. We further object to this decision being taken when the SPHSU has been a world-leading centre for health inequalities research for decades, and ‘Addressing Inequalities’ is one of the University of Glasgow’s ‘Research Beacons’.
So far, only an in-our-view biased pre-selection procedure for grades 8+ has taken place that highly favoured UK national male researchers at higher grades, resulting in only about a dozen staff being retained in the School of Health and Wellbeing at grades 8+, and a few staff at lower grades via other means. We demand that further measures be taken to mitigate the risk of redundancies among SPHSU staff across all grades and job families, as this short-sighted decision risks not only destroying the livelihoods of dozens of our colleagues, but also presents a substantial reputational risk to our University.
