Professor David Anderson, a senior elected representative of Aberdeen UCU, has been dismissed after 27 years’ service for sharing a document with staff in the constituency he was elected to represent, including union members.
David has been a staunch advocate for staff, defending jobs, challenging cuts and standing up for colleagues.
The university treated this as gross misconduct. We believe dismissal for a first offence in these circumstances is grossly disproportionate, particularly during a period of major restructuring and serious disagreement between staff and University management.
His dismissal has implications beyond Aberdeen: it concerns everyone who believes trade-union representatives should be able to speak up for those they represent without fear of victimisation or disproportionate punishment.
We call on the University of Aberdeen to reinstate Professor Anderson and to engage constructively with its recognised trade unions.
Stand up for trade unions: Reinstate Professor David Anderson
