Staff at University of Bristol have been told that devastating job cuts are planned at the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD).
We do not believe that these redundancies are justified, and we are writing to you on behalf of staff and students in CALD.
We urgently request that the university works with unions to avoid any redundancies at CALD.
We request that:
- The university stops plans for redundancies immediately at CALD, and works with unions to develop an institutional approach to meeting financial targets which avoids job losses
- Full financial information related to redundancy proposals, and information related to IFP student forecasting figures is shared transparently with unions
- The business case and rationale for these cuts is immediately re-evaluated
- The university responds effectively to the drop in international student numbers by actively and extensively recruiting, and sharing with CALD staff what the recruitment plans are
- CALD be given the time and opportunity to research, design and update courses to attract more students without fear of job cuts
- The university lobbies government to end hostile environment policies that make the UK a difficult choice for international students
- The university lobbies government for improvements to the university funding model
- The university lobbies government for immediate financial assistance instead of considering job losses.
We urgently request that the University does not impose job cuts and instead actions urgent and positive changes such as these.
The value of CALD staff and students
CALD students and staff make an astounding contribution culturally and financially to the university and to Bristol. The fee income generated through students joining and successfully completing CALD IFP (International Foundation Programme) and summer Pre-Sessional courses alone runs into millions and millions each year.
It is CALD’s Pre-Sessional courses that prepare international students to go on to complete successfully our taught post-graduate programmes.
CALD staff and students are one of the university’s cornerstones in terms of its Mission, Vision and Strategy and its aim to be placed among the Top 10 UK universities for teaching and research.
If the university truly wishes ‘to make a positive impact locally, nationally and globally’, this cannot be done with job losses.
If the university truly aims at ‘contributing significantly to the quality and success of Bristol’s economy, services and society by providing skills, jobs, financial stimulus, research and innovation capacity, helping society to flourish’, this cannot be done with job losses.
The loyalty, flexibility and hard work of CALD staff supported the university through the pandemic. The current situation, involving student recruitment fluctuations, and university management decisions, must not be made their responsibility to bear.
Support CALD staff. Support CALD students. Save our Centre.
