Adult education has a powerful and positive role in society. As well as empowering people to take charge of their lives, connecting communities and providing the skilled workers that employers need, adult education contributes to enriching our society, stimulates personal development and employability, which in turn helps reduce inequality and promote economic growth.
UCU members in the Adult Education work in local government, mayoral combined authorities, FE colleges and other providers. They are highly skilled, experienced education professionals, rooted in the community whose tireless work to support a diverse range of learners benefits the whole of society and promotes social cohesion.
If the UK government is serious about a driving economic growth, creating pathways to new skills, training and jobs and a decade of renewal it needs to invest in Adult Education and reverse the cuts to the Adult Skills Fund:
- spending on adult skills and apprenticeships in 2025 is 23% lower than 2009-10 levels
- spending on classroom-based adult education fell by over 40% since 2009-10
- spending on adult education/apprenticeships fell by 38% between 2010-11 and 2020-21
- the DfE has announced a 6% cut to Adult Skills Fund (ASF) for 2025-2026
- the DfE have informed Mayors to expect a 2-3% cut to their ASF for 2025-2026.
We, the undersigned, call upon the UK government to reverse the cuts to the Adult Skills Fund and invest in Adult and Community Education.
