Improve the terms and conditions of teachers at Nottingham

UPDATE: UCU has now negotiated with management around casualisation and have an agreement to take things forward

We, the undersigned, call on University of Nottingham to make clear its commitment to providing high quality education for students by taking immediate and decisive action to improve the terms and conditions of teachers.

For teachers, unfair and inequitable working conditions cause real hardship and distress. At the University of Nottingham, this is compounded by paying teaching affiliates in some departments fewer hours for the same work, and by the farming out of teaching by postgraduates to the UNITEMPS agency.

Casual, hourly paid ‘temp’ contracts disrupt educational relationships, stifle the development of teaching staff and often put them under unbearable pressure to cut corners by employing them on hourly rates that fail to cover the work they really do. Too often they have to choose between failing to offer students the education they deserve and working for free.

The working conditions of staff are the learning conditions for students.

It is unacceptable for universities who market themselves to students on their reputation for high quality provision to expect teaching affiliates to work without pay due to the underestimation of the time required to fulfil the role.

Because our teachers and students deserve better, we call on this university to:

  1. publish data showing the proportions of undergraduate classes that are being taught by staff on hourly paid contracts; and
  2. enter formal negotiations with the express aim of tackling unpaid labour and the use and abuse of casual contracts for teaching staff.
