UCU Hertfordshire petition: coursework turnaround time

UCU at the University of Hertfordshire notes the failure to agree with the employers that 20 working days constitutes a proper turnaround period for marked coursework.
UCU believes that any reduction from 20 working days will be damaging for both students and staff and invites you to sign the following petition:

‘We the undersigned support the view of the UCU branch that any reduction in the maximum turnaround time for returning marked coursework from 20 working days, compromises the quality of feedback to students, and causes additional stress to teaching staff, which is detrimental to their health and well-being.’

33 Ian Sturrock It's frequently a struggle, already, to return feedback within 20 working days, given that I and other staff often have 100+ pieces of work to mark each semester, usually handed in around the same time. Reducing it below 20 working days will be unsustainable.

Decreasing the turnaround time will severely increase the pressure on staff who are already straining to meet the constant high demands made on academics

  • Antony

The issue is not simply about pressure on staff but also quality of marking. Surely the students deserve better than highly pressurised, sweatshop – style marking?

  • JS

Good assessment and feedback takes time and effort.. the ‘click and collect’ mentality being encouraged with the students in the belief that it will improve NSS score needs to end!

  • Karen

The students on our programme are studying for a professional
qualification that will enable them to nurse very sick people to a very high
standard reflecting the standard of academic education at the University of
Hertfordshire. We must ensure this by having adequate time to measure their learning
and understanding and provide high quality feedback to facilitate their development
    and progression.

  • David

The management needs to listen and seriously engage with the concerns of the academic staff. There seems to be a persistent unwillingness to take on board our concerns, which is very troubling. Academic quality assurance, the long-term interests of our students, and staff mental health (amongst other things) are all at stake. Members (and non-members) need to sign this petition to send a very clear message that the management can’t keep ignoring the issue of 4-week turnaround of feedback (when it logically should be 20 days), or indeed any reduction of that time period.

My previous employer – another mid-tier UK university – had a marking turnaround time of three weeks. This was really challenging, to say the least, especially with larger class sizes. This KPI did what many such measures do – i.e. it changed the thing it was supposed to measure. We all ended up redesigning coursework assignments to require less labour-intensive marking. Essays became short reports, posters and automated multiple choice tests. I never missed another deadline but then the students never developed their writing skills or received thoughtful and considered feedback either. The current 20-day system at Herts, on the other hand, allows me to write individualised, constructive feedback for each and every student I teach without half-killing myself in the process. Which model would the University of Hertfordshire prefer?
